From Visitor Attractions to Conservation Leaders The Evolving Role of Zoos and Aquariums

Session Description

Zoos and aquariums have long been cherished visitor attractions, but for many years they have also been key players in biodiversity conservation. As the world faces an escalating biodiversity crisis, the role of zoos and aquariums continues to evolve, with institutions increasingly prioritising active conservation efforts alongside education and entertainment.

This session will explore how progressive zoos and aquariums are aligning with global biodiversity frameworks, contributing to species recovery, and engaging millions of visitors in conservation action.

Drawing on insights from WAZA’s 2030 Conservation Goal and other key initiatives, this session will highlight how institutions can further strengthen their role as recognised conservation partners. Attendees will gain valuable knowledge of best practices and actionable strategies to enhance their conservation efforts while fostering greater community involvement.
