As societal expectations shift, many Dutch zoos are rethinking their role beyond recreation to embrace a more purpose-driven approach. In this session, Goof Lukken, Senior Lecturer at Breda University, shares his research on the strategic repositioning of zoos in the Netherlands. He is joined by Carolien Ottjes, Chief Marketing Officer of Rotterdam Zoo (Diergaarde Blijdorp), who discusses the zoo’s new mission and strategy: "From zoo to icon for nature restoration." Together, they explore how Dutch zoos are navigating the balance between leisure, commercial goals, and social responsibility.
